Appearance, 2014 – ongoing Photographs in frames, variable dimensions
reconfigured to an abstract representation of time, light and chemical processes. Barnas poses the photo as a question on the ability of the visual to capture what is lived. Appearance raises questions about the fraying edges of representation, the line between language and image. Each time the work is on show, the image is rephotographed in its frame and placed in a new frame. As such, the history of the image becomes part of the image itself.
Appearance is a photo work based on a decaying photograph on display in the Astronomisch-Physikalischen Kabinett of museum Oranienschloss in Kassel. Originally showing a traditional portrait of a Victorian-era couple, the image has been reconfigured
The first Appearance was shown at Denn alles was den Gesetzen des Verstandes und der Vernunft widerstreitet, ist freilich unmöglich, Meinblau, Berlin in 2014
